Founded in 2022, zero44 is a maritime B2B SaaS start-up that is building digital tools for the shipping industry to reduce their carbon footprint and help the industry to get to carbon zero by 2050. One key challenge for the industry is to enter into EU emission trading next year and to prepare for additional market-based measures and regulations across the globe (e.g. US, Japan, China).

The initial digital solution focuses on the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the management of the rating by chartering and commercial teams. Currently, the main development focus is on the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) that will be extended to include the maritime sector in 2024. Together with three development partners across different segments and business models we are developing a digital solution to manage carbon settlements and carbon trading via the zero44 product. Interest across the industry is huge as the expected EU ETS costs are very high.

We are backed by our early customers and development partners like MPC Container Ships, Zeaborn Ship Management and Harren Group. In addition, our fantastic group of investors from the industry as well as the Berlin start-up ecosystem supports our development (e.g. Flagship Founders, Schulte Group’s Innoport, Atlantic Labs).

To support the growth and further development of zero44, we are looking for a Business Development Manager (f/m/d). Your mission
As a Strategy Manager it will be your mission to drive the strategic development of zero44. As new carbon regulation (e.g. Fuel EU Maritime, US International Maritime Pollution Accountability Act of 2023, Japan ETS) hits the industry, zero44 wants to be first in understanding what this regulation implies for our customers and to turn their challenges into great digital products. Partnering closely with our product, customer success and sales teams as well as our founders you will be responsible for driving new business initiatives from discovery to reality.

Your tasks and responsibilities

Your role focuses on business model and strategy development and includes the following responsibilities:
  • Bring in a new perspective in our venture building process, identifying and spearheading the top strategic initiatives
  • Help us build the product offering of zero44 with respect to new carbon regulation for our customers in the shipping industry
  • Define and drive our commercial set-up, incl. sales strategy and go-to-market
  • You will start new strategic and operational projects, where you will work independently and proactively and will be responsible for major challenges
  • Support with internal and external communication
  • Help the team execute on the chosen strategies
  • Closely collaborate with the founding team, sales, customer success and product development to achieve maximum impact
  • Help us look beyond the shipping industry in order to find out where the company could move next.
Your profile
  • You have a very good Master’s degree from a renowned university or business school in the field of Business, Law and Economics or a comparable course.
  • You are an intelligent risk taker who enjoys analyzing and rethinking problems - at the same time you are highly interested in turning your ideas into actions.
  • You bring sound xls-skills to the table and enjoy working with numbers.
  • You already have some work experience in process analysis, project management, startups or other fast-paced environment. You are customer focused and aim to translate analytic results into actionable and easy to use solutions.
  • You have a hands-on mentality, entrepreneurial thinking style, the ability to inspire others as well as a positive attitude.
  • You are independent, proactive, highly motivated, and good at problem solving.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions under uncertainty.
  • You have a genuine passion for the mission and product of zero44.
  • You are a clear communicator in English, both in written and spoken form, able to structure your ideas logically, communicate trade-offs, and explain complex technical concepts clearly.
